Chelsea v Aston Villa: The Blues drop more points in the Premier League

Image
Hi everyone  I hope you're well and had a wonderful Christmas. Sorry for the late article. Its been a busy couple of weeks.  So Chelsea once again dropped points in the Premier League at home to Aston Villa last night with a 1-1 draw leaving them 6th and 6 points behind leaders Liverpool. Well we have to be thankful that none of our rivals won during Boxing Day. With Lampard ringing in the changes due to the matches coming thick and fast, it was a chance for some of the players to stake their claim to a starting berth for the next couple of matches. Once again the Blues dominated the possession but did not put it to good use until Olivier Giroud scored a wonderful header towards the end of the 1st half, making that his 7th goal in all competitions and 3rd goal in 4 Premier League matches. Impressive stats considering how underused he is at Chelsea. Hopefully he wont leave Chelsea in January but that could happen with him targeting to be in the French squad for Euro 2020(...

Chelsea suffer setback on Merseyside and Champions League last 16 opponents confirmed

Good afternoon everyone I hope you're well and having a good start to the week. Christmas is fast approaching and very soon we will be entering a new and hopefully better year. Sorry for the absence. Was celebrating my birthday over a week ago and had a great day with family. Thank you for your posts and messages. They are highly appeciated. Now lets talk all things Chelsea. The Blues suffered only their second defeat of the season in the premier League at Everton on saturday evening after Gylfi  Sigurðsson converted his penalty in the 22nd minute due to a foul on Dominic Calvett-Lewin by Edouard Mendy who rushed off his line and clattered into the England international.  From there on Chelsea huffed and puffed but couldnt blow out the Toffees who defended resolutely till the final whistle. Despite the Blues creating more and dominating in possession Chelsea couldnt score a goal. To be honest the only player who can lift his head high is Reece James. The English right back cro...

Chelsea v Spurs: London derby ends in a stalemate

Image
Hello everyone I hope you're well and had a good weekend. As we approach the month of December the games come thick and fast. If I'm not mistaken there'll be an average of 2 games every 3 days between now and the 21st of december then Boxing Day on December 26 when Chelsea travel to Arsenal for a much anticipated derby in the late afternoon at 4:30pm. These are the kind of matches I would watch with my brother but due to Covid-19 and restrictions it will not be possible this year unfortunately. Anyway lets focus on Sunday's match which ended in a goaless draw at Stamford Bridge. Tottenham will definitely be the happier of the 2 teams with a point as that puts them on top of the table with 21 points and Chelsea remain 3rd with 19 points. Of course this is all likely to change when Leicester face Fulham later today so the Blues will likely be in 4th place at the end of the evening.  To be honest both teams were cautious in their approach, only attacking on the couner. So ...

Newcastle v Chelsea: Are Chelsea title contenders?

Image
Hello everybody I hope you're well and having a great start to the week.Thankful to be back after the internation break(the last one of 2020). So Chelsea picked up another win on Saturday lunchtime at Newcastle to be top of the table (albeit 2 hours) and extend their unbeaten run to 12 games if I'm not mistaken. The Blues were strong at the back despite missing Thiago Silva, who had just returned from Brazil. It was great to see Antonio Rudiger play with Kurt Zouma together. This shows that with Mendy in goal, Reece James on the right and Ben Chilwell on the left, the defence is solid. I think this is the best I've seen Chelsea defend since Mendy arrived and with 7 clean sheets in 9 matches, he's looking worth the £20 million spent by the Blues. The midfield also did a good job with Kante and Kovacic protecting the defence and attacking very well. I must say that the World Cup winner is looking like the player of old who won 2 consecutive titles with Leicester and Chels...

Chelsea v Sheffield United: Blues show fighting spirit to claim 3 points

Image
Hi everyone I hope you're well and safe during these unprecented times. I'm sorry for not being consistent. Its been a busy couple of weeks. Anyway lets get on with it. Credit to Chelsea for coming back from 1-0 after 9 minutes to win 4-1 against Sheffield United on saturday afternoon. The goals scored by the Blades were the first to be conceeded by the Blues in all comptetitions after 10 hours.  I initially thought that Chelsea was returning to their old ways (defensive naivety etc) but praise to the boys for not giving up and taking the game by the scruff of the neck. This win puts them in 3rd place , behind Leicester and Liverpool. This is a good way to enter the final international break of 2020. This means no EPL for 2 weeks but on the other hand the next couple of fixtures are looking not so kind with Newcastle away, Rennes away in the Champions League where victory will assure qualification to the next round and we end november with a fesity November at home against To...

Chelsea v Southampton: 2 points dropped by the Blues

Image
Good afternoon everyone  I hope you're well and had a good weekend. So what a dramatic weekend of football we had starting with the Merseyside derby and it continued with Chelsea-Southampton which finished 3-3 after the Saints managed to grab a point at the death thanks to Vestergaard. Once again Chelsea fail to kill off a match and this will cost them dearly come end of the season. Where do I begin? oh yes the defence. With Mendy injured, Kepa was put in the starting XI to prove his worth to the coach and he failed the test. With Thiago Silva being left out with Sevilla to come in midweek it was the duo Zouma-Christiansen and I wasnt convinced one bit. Thankfully Lamaprd will be able to call on him for tomorrow's match and with Man United to come at the weekeend,it'll be interesting to see which team he sends out tomorrow night at the Bridge.Glad that Werner got a double and Havertz scored as well. Hopefully this is the beginning of great things to come. Sevilla will also...

Chelsea v Crystal Palace: Sublime stuff from The Blues

Image
Hello everybody I hope you are well and having a good start to the week and Autumn. What a Super Sunday we had yesterday with Man Utd losing 6-1 at home to Spurs, sweet revenge for Jose Mourinho and EPL champions Liverpool losing 7-2 at Aston Villa. Who would have thought? Anyway lets focus on the game against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea were 4-0 winners with goals from Chilwell,Zouma and a brace from Jorginho albeit from the penalty spot. This was a comprehensive performance from the Blues who defended well wiith debuts for Edouard Mendy and Ben Chilwell. The Englishman showed why he's worth the £50 million and Thiago Silva was impressive as well.Overall a wonderul performance in the London derby. I believe Lampard has found a decent back 5 and with Ziyech to return, the attacking side will definitely not be lacking. Lets see how this goes after the international break with the Champions League and the FA Cup to come in the New Year so each player is going to p...

West Brom v Chelsea: What a bonkers match

Image
Good afternoon I hope you're well and had a restful weekend. So saturday evening produced a bonkers match at The Hawthorns between West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea. After 3 cheaply given away goals in the first half, the Blues fought back with goals from academy players Mount,Abraham and Hudson-Odoi to claim a draw and avoid a second defeat of the season. So as I've been writing in most of my articles throughout the year, Chelsea have been poor defensively and saturday was no surprise with errors from Alonso and Thiago Silva led to a quick double for Robinson. The third goal was a lapse in concentration. Goodness me will this defence improve this year? Difficult to say at the moment. Despite having spent over £200 million on forwards,a goalkeeper and defenders ,the defence is still suspect so this could be a long season for Chelsea. Overall I'm happy that Chelsea avoided defeat but am still concerned by the defence. Cant wait to have all our players back and see what theyt ...

Chelsea arent ready to compete with Liverpool or Man City

Image
Good afternoon everyone Happy Monday!I hope you had a restful weekend and are ready for a brand new week. Its hard to believe that the year is ending in less than 100 days. How time flies! Anyway lets get into business. Yesterday's blockbuster match turned out to be one to forget after falling to a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Lets be honest from kick off the strategy was to keep it tight at the back for as long as possible (a page from Jose Mourinho's book) and counter attack, which is very unlike Frank Lampard. All was going well until the 44th minute when Andreas Christiansen did the unthinkable and fouled Mané outside the box. At first he received a yellow card but after a VAR review it was changed to red and thats where it all fell apart for the Blues. Lack of experience? Naivity? Its hard to say but he'll miss the game in midweek in the Carabao Cup against Barnsley. Looks like Rudiger will be recalled and hopefully Thiago Silva will play as well. This ...

New Premier League season,same issues

Image
Hello everyone I hope you are all well and had a restful summer break. The good news is the Premier League is back and Chelsea kicked off their campaign with a 3-1 win at Brighton on Monday night. I'll be honest the Seagulls took the game to the Blues who were far from convincing defensively especially when Tossard scored the esquisite equalizer in the second half after a Jorginho penalty before half time. After shipping in 54 goals last season, one would think that the defenders would have learnt from their mistakes. Clearly they didnt. In this game I can only fault Kepa who should have done way better in my opinion. But lets focus on the positives. Timo Werner looked sharp for his debut and with his pace gave the Brighton defence a hard time. Kai Havertz didnt look too great after a long season participating in the Europa League with Leverkusen and Germany in the Nations League so its too early to judge him. The beautiful goal by Reece James was just incredible. I could watch it ...

Champions League: What a week of drama

Image
Copyright fr.uefa.com Good afternoon everyone I hope you are all well and enjoying the last few weeks of the summer holidays, albeit in difficult circumstances. So the UEFA Champions League made its return 2 weeks ago with 2nd leg ties that still  needed to be played like Chelsea v Bayern Munich, Lyon v Juventus and Manchester City v Real Madrid and boy were there surprises with Lyon making it past the Italian Champions despite a 2-1 defeat and of course the end of Maurizio Sarri's tenure as head coach. Bayern Munich and Man City qualifying werent really shocks as the damage was done in the 1st leg, at least for Chelsea but thats not the exciting part.So for the first time ever 2 French teams in the semis and PSG's first semi final appearance since 1995.  Last Wednesday saw PSG come from behind to defeat Atlanta 2-1 with Marquinhos and Choupo-Moting gettting the goals. Credit to the French champions for digging in deep and not giving up. Now they have a semi final date w...

Chelsea end of season review

Image
Hi everyone  I hope you are well and keeping safe during these unprecedented times. So the longest Premier League season in recent memory ended a week ago with Chelsea finishing 4th and qualifying for next year's Champions League. All things considered The Blues were written off at the beginning of the season with the transfer ban and the sale of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid so hats off to Frank Lampard and the boys for soldiering on.  The FA Cup finam defeat left a bitter taste and yes we can blame Anthony Taylor for making poor decisions such as sending off  Kovacic or not giving a penalty when Martinez caught the ball outside of the box but once again the defence was poor after letting Aubameyang win a penalty then chip in his second after bypassing the centre backs. Lampard also could have made better substitutions in the second half. Kanté could have brought something despite not being 100%. Anyway whats done is done and its time to focus on Bayern Munich this Saturday...

Chelsea ripped to shreds by Sheffield United

Image
Hi everyone I hope you're well. Writing this post isnt easy, especially after seeing your team receive a 3-0 hiding in the Premier League. Thank goodness I didnt watch the 1st half on Saturday. I probably might have broken my telly out of anger and disappointment. The Blues were unfortunately no better in the second half as they had lots of chances but The Blades defended valiantly and played way better. Luckily the defeat didnt have dire consequences as Leicester were hammered 4-1 by Bournemouth on Sunday and Southampton left Old Trafford with a point after a 2-2 draw last night. In all honesty, the defence has been Chelsea's weak point, which was unimaginable years ago with the likes of Terry,Carvahlo,Ashley Cole, Alex,Bosingwa, Gallas and the list is endless. As I've been saying throughout the season, Frank Lampard needs to buy a new left back like Ben Chilwell or Nicolas Tagliafico this summer if they want to compete for the title next year.A new goalkeeper is also neede...

Project Restart: Chelsea are almost at the finish line

Image
Hello everyone I hope you're well. Sorry for the long absence. I've been thinking about how I'd write my first post since the Premier League resumed in June. So here it goes. Chelsea have been playing quite well actually with wins over Aston Villa, Manchester City and Watford, the only blip being the defeat at West Ham which I'll get to in a moment. Lets not forget the FA Cup win at Leicester, which now means a semi-final tie with Manchester United on July 19. So as I was watching Chelsea play, I've noticed how they've been attacking really well and showing grit to come back (against Villa and Manchester City) but the defence has been our weak spot under Frank Lampard. From his time at Derby County to his return at Stamford Bridge last July, his teams tend to attack well but struggle to keep clean sheets. The one against Watford at the weekend was only the second in 11 matches. Thats apalling for a team that wants to compete for titles next year. Liverpool correct...

The Bundesliga is back! Wunderbar?

Image
Hello Friends Welcome back to my blog. I hope you are well and safe during this pandemic. I know the last time I posted, most football leagues had suspended. Over 2 months later, the Bundesliga is the only top 5 league that has resumed and it has been interesting to see how football could possibly look like for the forseeable future. The first game I watched was the Ruhr derby between Dortmund and Schalke 04. It was odd for me not to see the Yellow wall or 80,000 fans at Signal Iduna Park for such a big match. As you are aware only up to 200 people can be present for a match, this includes medical staff, security personnel, coaches, players and ball boys. Also no more handshakes, a distance of 1,5 metres must be respected and no nasty tackles. These are all part of the league's guidelines. Moving on Dortmund won 4-0 and are definitely giving Bayern Munich a run for their money. Looking at the sqaud with the likes of Haaland, Sancho, Reus, Reyna, Hakimi, they'll push Bayern to t...

No football and CoronaVirus

Image
Hello everyone I hope you're well. So as you are all aware, football leagues across the world have been suspended since early March and some plan on resuming in May depending on the situation concerning COVID-19. As a football fan, its sad when you dont have football to look forward to watching on the weekend. And its been the case for the last 3 or so weeks. I've even moaned about it to my girlfriend, who isn't a huge football fan but understands my longing and need to watch it. So the last match Chelsea played was at home against Everton on March 8, winning 4-0. After a couple of shaky performances I must say this was the best I've seen Chelsea play this season. They dominated from the 1st minute to the last, giving the Toffees no room to go past the defence, so hats off to Frank Lampard. The victory leaves the Blues in 4th place, with a 3 point cushion over Manchester United. The race for the Top 4 is heating up but if Chelsea continue to win their matches, the...
